Saving, with irregular income, which plagues most self-employed women, is about building breathing space so your year doesn't feel like a tightrope walk.

Today's Money Spark - Building a Buffer

July is National Savings Month in South Africa and the advice we see on social media often assumes a tidy payday that arrives like clockwork. If you’re self-employed, money comes in lumps, gaps, and surprises. One month you feel fine, the next you’re negotiating with yourself in the supermarket aisle.

This is why I created my Calm Cashflow approach. We stop pretending your income is steady and we work with the reality: your costs are fairly predictable, your income isn’t, and the thing that makes everything feel calmer is a Buffer.

A buffer is not a “one day when I’m rich” savings goal. It’s practical. It is the money that cushions a late-paying client, a quiet week, or a car battery that chooses violence.

When strain hits, the familiar behaviours show up: Avoiding the numbers; Scrambling to cover the gap; Hustling harder to outrun the financial gap; or Pleasing your way into offering discounts and freebies you can’t afford. A financial Buffer account doesn’t fix life, but it does change your nervous system’s volume. You stop operating like every month is an emergency.

Help me build a Buffer

1. Find your baseline, quickly

Take 10 minutes and write down what your month costs to run at a basic level. Home, food, transport, medical aid, business essentials, and a bit of life. That’s your baseline. You need it because your Buffer has a job: to cover that baseline when income dips.

2. Start a 'Quiet Month' Buffer, even if it's tiny

Open a separate savings account or repurpose an existing one to something that makes you smile, like "Breathing Space".

3. Do the skim

Every time money lands, skim a small percentage into that Buffer. Choose a number so small it feels doable on your worst month, not your best. One percent. Two percent. Five percent. Consistency beats grand plans you abandon by Thursday.

So what is the freebie digital download today? It is the Savings Buffer Starter Kit, which is designed for the woman whose money comes in lumps throughout the year and not, nicely spread out parcels. This kit will help you build a Buffer Account that will make your life a lot easier. Trust me, I have set this up and it works.

"A crisis becomes an inconvenience when you have an emergency fund" - Dave Ramsey

When I became self-employed in November 2024, one of the biggest surprises was how weird it felt to lose the predictable rhythm of a monthly salary. I’d been used to money arriving in neat increments, like clockwork. Suddenly it was feast and famine. A strong month would come in and I’d feel relieved, then a quieter month would land and I would fight panic. Even when the annual picture was fine, the month-to-month swings made everything feel more dramatic than it needed to be.

That’s when I started researching how other self-employed people create stability, and I kept coming across the idea of a Buffer Account. I set one up, and I can honestly say it’s changed my life.

Here’s what I do now: Every bit of income I receive, no matter how big or small, goes straight into my Buffer Account (minus a percentage for tax which goes into a separate fund). I don’t treat that money as “spendable” yet. Instead, once a month, I pay myself a salary out of the buffer. It’s the same salary every month, even if the month behind me was brilliant or quiet.

The amount I pay myself is based on my forecast for the year. I’m also conservative on purpose. I’d rather set my “salary” slightly lower and build a cushion than squeeze every cent out and end up panicking when work slows down.

What I love most is the psychological shift. A Buffer Account turns irregular income into something that feels steady. It creates a space between what comes in and what you live on, and that space is where the calm lives.

I was so excited by this idea that I have created a product called Calm Cashflow which outlines the whole process.

Saving with irregular income is about being kind to Future You. Once you know how to work with a Buffer Account, you can bring a bit more calm to the rollercoaster that is self-employment.
